The New family

This page tells the story of one of my maternal ancestral lines, the News.

The family name has multiple origins. For some the surname originated from a nickname for a new arrival to an area. For others the name is derived from a place where there was a yew tree (coming from atten ewe - meaning at the yew). And finally some are translated from the German surname Neu. So far I do not know which origin my ancestral line comes from.

The Bloxham/Bloxam Family

The Bloxham/Bloxam family This page tells the story of one of my paternal grandmother's ancestral lines, the Bloxham family (spelt Bloxam in earlier generations). The surname is a habitational one (meaning it is derived from a location) and their are two locations from which it derives. The first is the English hamlet of Bloxholm in the county of Lincolnshire. The second is the English village of Bloxham in the county of Oxfordshire near the cotswolds. This second is the more likely origin for my ancestors as the furthest ancestor I have traced at once point lived approximately 3 miles east of Bloxham in the Oxfordshire village of Adderbury . The Fordham Family

The Fordham family This page tells the story of my paternal line, the Fordham family. The family name itself is derived from one of three English villages of the same name, one in Cambridgeshire, one in Essex and one in Dorset. The village name comes from Anglo Saxon english meaning ford (the shallow point of a river where you can cross) and hamm meaning a pasture or meadow. I have traced my branch of the Fordhams to the village of Hadstock approximately 20 miles from the Cambridgeshire village of Fordham. Family legend One family legend (and almostly definitely unprovable) I received from my father was that one of our Fordham ancestors was second in command to 11th century Anglo Saxon resistance leader Hereward the Wake who fought against the Normans after their conquest of England in 1066. James BAILEY (1851 - 1892) James' childhood My great great grandfather James Bailey was born on the 11th January 1851 in Pownall Fee in Cheshire, just south of Manchester 1 . James' parents were James Bailey, a provision dealer and Elizabeth Bailey nee Renshaw 2 . When James was born his father, James Sr. was 36 and his mother Elizabeth was 29. At the time of birth James had an older brother John whose age is unclear (born 1834 on the 1851 census 3 and 1839 on the 1861 census 4 ). On the 1851 census James was living with his brother and parents in Macclesfield, Cheshire 5 . In 1854, when James was 3, his younger brother Mark was born in Cheadle, in Cheshire 6 .
