Constance's childhood
My great
grandmother Constance was born on the 8th October 1896 at the family home of 2.
Kemsley's Yard, High Street, Sittingbourne in Kent. Her father was brickfield labourer, Percy Edward
Russell, born in Bermondsey, London.
Constance's mother, Jane Russell nee Nye was a British subject born in
Italy.
It appears
the family had been living in Sittingbourne for some years as it is where
Constance older sister, Florence, four years her senior, had been born. Two years later, in 1898 the family are still
in Sittingbourne when Constance's sister Alice was born there.
At some
point the family moved to the Medway Towns, and in 1899 Constance's sister
Daisy was born in the Luton area of Chatham, Kent.
On the 31st
March 1901 the national census took place and Constance was living with her
parents and her 3 sisters in the parish of Gillingham in Kent. At the time the family were supported by
Constance's father working as a labourer in the nearby HM Dockyard.
Constance's marriage and family
On the
twenty-third of June 1923, two days after her fiancé's 24th birthday Constance,
aged 27, married Frederick Arthur New.
At the time of marriage Constance was living at 26 King Edward Road,
Gillingham while her labourer husband was living in the same town at 42 Skinner
Street. Constance's profession was
domestic servant and her father was a general labourer. Her new father-in-law was working as a
driller.
The
following year in 1924 Constance's first child was born in the Medway district
(which includes the town of Gillingham where they were married).
There was a
large gap between the birth of the first and second child but 12 years later,
in 1936, their second child was born.
The family were living at Waterside Lane in Gillingham and Constance's
husband was working as a road labourer.
In 1954 Constance's
second child married in the neighbouring town of Chatham. Constance's husband was then 55 and working
as a labourer at the dockyard.
Constance
died in Chatham, neighbouring town to Gillingham where she spent her married
life in 1967.
